A COACH passenger seriously injured in a crash with a lorry carrying a wide load on the A66 is in a comfortable condition in hospital.

The man was injured in the crash between a Caledonian Travel coach and the lorry carrying a wide load on Monday, August 2, near to Scotch Corner.

The 53-year-old, who has not been named, suffered serious chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries in the crash.

He was flown by the Great North Air Ambulance to the James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, with what were thought to be life threatening injuries.

He is still in hospital but his condition has been described as comfortable.

The man was travelling on the coach, full of adults, which had made several pick-ups in Scotland to Folkestone, Kent, when the crash took place around 11.15am.

A second coach passenger suffered less serious injuries in the crash with the low loader which was one of two in convoy heading west along the A66.

The coach was heading east when it was damaged in the collision near to Gilling West.

The remaining coach passengers were taken from the scene by a replacement bus and the road re-opened around 6pm.
