A NORTH Yorkshire book shop has been named as one of the best in the country.

White Rose Books in Thirsk, has been voted the top independent bookshop in the North and Scotland region.

And as a regional winner, the shop goes on to the shortlist for the national Gardners Independent Bookseller of the Year Award, to find the best all-round bookshop in Britain.

The winner of the national award will be announced at a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice in London on May 17.

White Rose Books was set up by father and daughter team Steve Clements and Sue Lake in October 1995.

Its Stories Room is popular with schools and nurseries for reading events and book fairs, with family friendly high chairs and facilities.

The shop also offers a range of non-book product such as toys, educational games and stationery to entice customers, who also are able to join the shop’s loyalty scheme, and e-marketing scheme, which reaches more than 3,000 customers.

Director Sue Lake said: "This is testament to the bookshop team who show incredible commitment and energy in their work and continue to offer outstanding personal service and knowledge."

Neill Denny, the editor-in-chief of the Bookseller, said: "The judging panel were amazingly impressed with White Rose Books - a vibrant, exciting shop that really brings books to life and is loved by its customers."
