THE group responsible for the Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Richmondshire have been named among the best in the country.

The Richmond Border Watch group, which is supported by the Richmondshire Community Safety Partnership, is one of 40 watch schemes selected by the National Neighbourhood Watch Scheme to highlight good practice.

The Richmondshire group will be featured on the Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network website and used as an example at conferences and in return border watch receives £1000 to support its work.

Border Watch is made up of 50 volunteers who cover the Richmond rural ward areas of Gilling West, Barton, Newsham and Eppelby, Melsonby, Middleton Tyas and Croft.

PC John Wilbor, who co-ordinates the scheme, said: "This is excellent news for the scheme and Richmondshire as a whole.

"It shows that all the hard work and hours of patrols that are done in our area are being recognised. Over the last four years the dedication of the scheme members has been reflected in how the community is taking responsibility for keeping us all safe."
