THE organisers of a silent art auction that has brought together a range of work by local artists and media personalities have hailed the event as a huge success.

The Wall to Wall auction has welcomed more than 1,000 visitors a day to The Station, in Richmond, over the past three weeks to view the 110 artworks on offer.

Artworks have been donated by celebrities including Michael Parkinson, Kate Moss, Sir Ben Kingsley and Sam Taylor- Wood, as well as artists such as Mackenzie Thorpe, Joe Cornish and Damien Hirst.

Many of the pieces have been donated from the walls of ordinary people who support The Station, which will receive the proceeds of the auction to help with its upkeep.

The Station’s operations manager, Matthew Reed, said: "February is usually a pretty quiet time of the year for us but during the Wall to Wall silent art auction we have been receiving an average of 1,000 visitors a day, which is really quite remarkable."

With less than two days to go until the auction ends on Sunday at 5pm, organisers have put in place a system to ensure bidders can have a fair chance at claiming their chosen piece, whether they make their bid in person or online.

Donald Cline, the event co-ordinator, said: "We are expecting an unusually busy day on Sunday. In anticipation of a pretty hot finale, we are setting up a big screen in The Station where bidders can watch the status of bidding happening online before deciding how much they want to offer on the bidding forms we are using in the building".

"At 5pm all online bidding stops and any final bids that have been received on bidding forms will then be processed. If the final bid that we have been given on a paper bidding form exceeds the top online bid, that bidder will get the work, otherwise the top online bid is deemed to be the highest bidder."
