Emergency services were on the scene after a HGV caught fire at traffic lights on a busy roundabout this morning.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) confirmed they had received a report of a lorry which had caught fire at Scotch Corner roundabout on the A1(M) at around 8:30am today (April 5).

They said it is not believed the fire was a result of a collision, and had likely occurred after the vehicle stopped at a set of traffic lights at the roundabout.

The Northern Echo:

They confirmed the occupants of the HGV were able to leave the vehicle and did not require medical treatment.

An NYFRS spokesperson said: "At around 8.30am this morning (Wednesday, 5 April) North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire Police were called to the roundabout at Scotch Corner. 

"This was because a HGV had caught fire.  

"It is not believed the lorry was involved in a collision but had stopped at traffic lights at the roundabout. The occupants managed to leave the vehicle and did not require medical attention. 

"Road closures are in place while the vehicle is made safe and recovery takes place.  

"If possible, please avoid the area."

Meanwhile, North Yorskhire Police (NYP) confirmed they were in attendance after receiving a report of the fire at 8:40am.

Speaking on the incident, they urged motorists to avoid the area and to check road closures.

An NYP spokesperson said: "Vehicle fire at Scotch Corner - please avoid the area

"We're at the scene of a lorry on fire at the A1/A66 roundabout, Scotch Corner.

According to AA traffic maps, the road has been closed and there is slow traffic on the A66 Westbound at A1(M) J53 (Scotch Corner) due to the incident.
