FARMS across the Yorkshire Dales National Park could be going even greener with a new scheme to cut down on carbon.

Ten farms across the Dales and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty have been chosen to undergo full scale carbon audits. Experts from Carbon Toolkit will carry out detailed assessments of feed, fertilister, slurry and diesel use as well as investigating carbon sequestration.

Lenny and Jenny Bowes who originally come from Hunton near Richmond became tennants at Ghyll Bank Farm at Orton in the Park last year with 1,000 sheep, 70 suckler cows, six sows and turkeys on 600 acres of grassland.

"We are enthusiastic about the changes that can be made to the farm," said Jenny. "We want to know how we can reduce carbon emissions while maintaining and improving the business. We are concerned about the future of the environment and we just want to make it better."
