A COUNCIL is calling on youngsters aged 16 to 24 to look at apprenticeships.

Up to 190 young people have found a career through the special scheme run by Hambleton District Council which offers up to £2,000 in wage subsidy grants to small businesses who take on apprentices.

Georgia, 20, from Thirsk, was voted the Sparks North East Young Apprentice of the Year after joining A Turner Electrical of Sowerby two years ago. After leaving school following A Levels Georgia said she knew university wasn't for her so approached the firm for work experience and an apprenticeship also enrolling at Middlesbrough College.

Andrew Turner said: "We were unsure about taking on an apprentice, but having been impressed with her grit and determination we were glad to support her. It took a lot of courage on Georgia’s part to jump into what’s traditionally been a male dominated career as an electrician, but she has been top of both her years at college and won the Sparks North East apprentice of the year – the only female in the area final in Newcastle. It's been hugely positive and the help and financial support from Hambleton was invaluable."
