MAJOR work to widen Tanton Bridge near Stokesley is due to start with the aim of reducing accidents and providing a safer crossing for pedestrians.

North Yorkshire County Council will carry out the work to widen the bridge on the B1365 to accommodate two-way traffic and create a footpath at either side.

The work starts on January 20, lasting 20 weeks under a full road closure. Diversion signs will be put up on the first day of the closure.

Cllr Bryn Griffiths said currently the bridge was 'unsuitable for 21st century traffic'. He added: “There have been numerous repairs due to collisions in recent years, which is ultimately down to the width of the bridge and the nature of the sharp corner it is on."
