RIPON Grammar School's talented Under-13 cricketers were congratulated by cricket legend Geoffrey Boycott after triumphing in the Yorkshire Cup.

The boys won their semi-final against Wickersley School by just three runs in a tight finish, after battling from 57-8 to 105 all out in the 19th over, to make the final against Kettlethorpe High School.

Following their magnificent win at York's Woodhouse Grange Cricket Club - one of the county's leading amateur cricket clubs - director of sport Adam Milner said that: "It was an excellent day, with outstanding bowling in the final from our boys."

The team were delighted to be presented with the cup and winners' medals by Mr Boycott OBE, a former Yorkshire and England cricketer and one of England's most successful opening batsmen.

Meanwhile, a team of second formers have come up with a novel design for a modern cricket pavilion and changing block which won them a competition.

The team created an innovative figure of eight building, with a huge tree taking pride of place in a courtyard in the middle of the larger circle.

The design won them first place in this year’s Building for the Future project, in which ten groups of students competed against each other to win over a panel of expert judges with their proposals.

The challenge aims to give second formers a taste of running their own business while preparing them for a range of careers including project manager, architect, interior designer and IT consultant.

Head judge Anthony Henson, a director at SDA Architects, said: “It was very close, but the MAIA team met the brief in every area and came up with a very impressive design.”

MAIA’s project manager Eva Joussemet, 13, from Littlethorpe, said she and her team-mates had gained a lot from taking part in the challenge.
