A PRIMARY school is celebrating its successes after its pupils achieved third place in an international mathematics challenge.

Pupils at Aiskew, Leeming Bar Primary School, near Northallerton, managed to beat thousands of others, from more than 100 schools in the UK, Europe and The Middle East, at the Mathletics Summer Sprint 2019 in June.

The challenge, which ran between Monday, June 17 and Sunday, June 23, involved pupils competing against each other, across schools, using an online tool to achieve three prizes.

The challenge also allowed pupils to raise money for UNICEF, with cash donated from its creators, 3P Learning.

Bethany Stanley, headteacher at Aiskew, Leeming Bar Primary School, said: "The students were so excited and eager to take part in the Summer Sprint maths challenge and it has been very encouraging to see them so driven.

"All pupils got stuck in and have found a passion for maths in the spirit of competition.

"Children were dedicated to using Mathletics both in school and at home."

The challenge was hosted on the Mathletics platform, which allowed the pupils to compete in live, multi-player challenges.

Ms Stanley said: "Since introducing Mathletics to the classroom, we have seen a world of change in our students’ attitude to maths.

"They have become so much more motivated and focused, while improving their grades too. Pupils know that if they are struggling with a concept, they can log into Mathletics and practise this area in order to master it."

Ms Stanley said the online tool had helped the pupils better-understand mathematics.

Judy Peritz Wynne of 3P Learning added: "Congratulations to everyone at Aiskew Leeming Bar Primary School who took part in the Summer Sprint.

"Well done for your brilliant achievement – it’s fantastic to see so many children getting stuck into a maths competition to top off a successful school year."
