GIANT artworks from across North Yorkshire have been shortlisted to as finalists in the Tour de Yorkshire land art competition.

Spectacular land art creations could be seen animating the route over the four days of the cycle race in early May and now 12 pieces have been shortlisted to go head-to-head in a public vote.

Voting for the competition opens today and the entries from North Yorkshire vying for the crown are; a giant heart made from pairs of donated trainers in Exelby; a golf-themed Tour de Yorkshire design in Bedale and a giant washing line with Tour de Yorkshire jerseys hanging from it in Middleham.

The competition is organised by Welcome to Yorkshire and its commercial director, Peter Dodd, said: “Giant, spectacular land art is now synonymous with the Tour de Yorkshire and we’re always amazed by the number and quality of the pieces we see lining the route each year.

The Northern Echo:

“The effort people put in to produce these eye-catching creations is truly unbelievable, and organising this competition is our way of rewarding that ambition and endeavour.

“We’d like to thank everyone who created land art for this year’s race.

“It was an incredibly tough job compiling the shortlist because we had so many great, imaginative entries, and we wish the very best of luck to all those who have been selected.”

The deadline for voting is midnight on June 14 and once the numbers have been counted and verified, the winner will be presented with the coveted Tour de Yorkshire Land Art Trophy. Vote online at
