RICHMOND residents will be invited to visit the town's key tourist attractions for free as part of a Love Being Local Day.

People living in the town and surrounding areas will get free entry to The Green Howards Museum, Richmond Castle, The Georgian Theatre Experience and Richmondshire Museum on Saturday, March 30 between 10am and 4pm.

There will also be free family tours of The Station at 11am and 2pm, and the Old Grammar School on Station Road will also be open for visitors to find out more about their re-development plans.

As part of the day, The Green Howards Museum is holding a pop-up Mess in the Normanby Room to raise money for its Medal Room project.

In conjunction with Catterick Garrison’s Veterans’ Artisan Bakery, a flat fee of £3.75 provides a drink and a cake or savoury snack. Walk-ins on the day are welcome but advance booking is advised.

The Love Being Local event is just one of many initiatives organised by the Welcome to Richmond group to promote tourism in Richmond and Lower Swaledale, including the popular Town Ticket which enables discounted entry to the key attractions and price reductions at local eateries between April and October. The group also hosts GeorgeFest, the town’s summer Georgian Festival, and produces a town map and supporting tourist information resources.

“Richmond is a fantastic place to live with so much amazing history right here on our doorstep,” said Eileen Halliday, Chair of the Welcome to Richmond group which is hosting the event for the fourth year running.

“The Love Being Local Day is an excellent opportunity for residents to re-visit the town’s attractions or even experience them for the first time. All admission charges have been waived so it is a good opportunity for people to visit as many venues as possible, have a great day out, and then tell their friends, families and visitors what our amazing town has to offer,” she added.

Almost 1000 people took part in last year’s event.

To gain free entry on the day, residents should bring some documentation proving their Richmondshire residency.
