A PET charity is urging residents to think about rehoming homeless animals ahead of Christmas.

The Blue Cross centre in Thirsk has taken in dozens of abandoned animals but has warned not every homeless pet will find a home.

The shelter on Station Road has been home to Summer, a one-year-old stray cat who has been living at the centre for more than two months.

Staff said they can not be sure if the feline has ever had a home during her young life.

Will Lamping shelter manager said: “While we try and give all the pets in our care the best Christmas possible with a special dinner, most of them do not enjoy kennel life and would much rather be next to a cosy fire and enjoying the festive season with a family of their own.

“While it is never a good idea to get a pet as a surprise for someone, for those having a quiet family Christmas it may be a good time of year to take on a pet."

Mr Lamping said the Blue Cross urges people to only consider a rescue animal if they are sure they can provide it with lifetime support in a loving home.

The shelter will be open until Christmas Eve in an attempt to find homeless pets a loving home.
