CHILDREN from a village school have serenaded a fond farewell to two women who have run a small shop from their home for the last 30 years.
Carol Paxton and her mother-in-law Dorothy Paxton have run the village shop in Kirkby Fleetham, near Northallerton, since moving to the village – but have now decided it is time to retire.
In an effort to thank the women, children from the local primary school surprised them on their final day with a song written especially for them.
Mrs Paxton said: "The children arrived and sang us a song to the tune of Wheels on the Bus. It was lovely! We were very touched."
School administrator and parent Lyndsay Sturdy said: "We wanted to let them know how we have appreciated the shop over the years. It is a big asset but as it is in their home it can't be taken over.
"Parents and staff at the school have clubbed together for vouchers for afternoon tea at Betty's as a treat for them."
