TIME is running out for children across North Yorkshire to complete a reading challenge thrown down by the county's libraries.

Over 9,500 children aged from four to eleven signed up to take part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge. This years theme was Mischief Makers , inspired by the much-loved children's comic Beano which is celebrating its 80th anniversary.

As youngsters progressed in the challenge they were awarded free incentives, including a Beano treasure map and stickers, with epic pranks. They receive a gold medal and certificate once they complete the task of reading six books. Children aged 13 to 24 were encouraged to volunteer in local libraries to support the challenge and help children read.

As children return to school the challenge is due to finish this weekend on September 8 and the library service wants to make sure children don't miss out on getting their rewards.

County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries, said: “This year’s theme, Mischief Makers, has proved a huge success, with many libraries reporting unprecedented demand. The challenge ends on Saturday, so we’re reminding all participants to return to their library before then to make sure they finish it and collect their certificates. We don’t want anyone to miss completing the challenge.”
