A TEAM from the RAF swapped wings for walking boots when they tackled Yorkshire’s tough Three Peaks Challenge.

And after completing the arduous 26-mile trek in under ten hours the group, from RAF Leeming, raised more than £1,000 for the RSAF Benevolent Fund – twice the sum they expected.

Organiser Sergeant Kate Goodfellow decided to raise money for and help increase awareness of the RAFBF after they provided her and her family with support in the past.

“They are a really good charity and I don’t think a lot of people know what they do. You can go to them for absolutely anything. I want to help raise awareness of that,” she said.

She added: “It rained for pretty much the whole time we were walking. I think we could have jumped in a river and come out drier.

“Team spirit was mostly high. There were times during the consistent downpour which tested our sense of humour but we really laughed a lot.

“We also kept morale going with the promise of Prosecco on the bus after the challenge and visiting the chippy in Hawes on the way home.”

As well as Sgt Goodfellow the team consisted of Dave Warren, Pete Brown, Rob McCormack, Joanna O’Brien, Ben Lister, Sarah McGhin and Rob Gallagher.

The Three Peaks Challenge involves reaching the summits of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.
