AN inspirational centre for injured or sick veterans was among the beneficiaries of the charities supported by the former chairman of Richmondshire District Council.

During his year of office, Cllr Russell Lord raised a total of £4,800 for a variety of local good causes through a wide range of events – and among them was the Phoenix House Recovery Centre at Catterick Garrison.

Run by Help for Heroes, the centre aims to inspire people who have been wounded, injured or become sick while serving the country, to enable them to lead an active, independent and fulfilling life.

The specially designed building includes 46 en-suite rooms, four family rooms, an IT suite, training facilities, gym, café and social areas.

Cllr Lord presented £1,000 to the centre and also gave cash to the Great North Air Ambulance and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, SSAFA, and the MRI Campaign at the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton.

The money was raised through raffles, auctions and tombolas at various events through the year, including the civic dinner and reception.
