A RESORT in North Yorkshire has become the first in the region to join a new nationwide recycling scheme which aims to save coffee packaging waste from landfill.

A collection box for people to drop off all brands of coffee packaging waste has been placed at Whitby Library - with funds raised going to support a local playgroup and a school.

The majority of coffee packaging waste currently ends up in landfill as local councils don’t have the infrastructure to recycle mixed plastics.

However the waste is recyclable, prompting Kenco to partner with recycling experts TerraCycle to set up the scheme, known as the Coffee Packaging Brigade.

Alison Walsh, a parent who organises the Glaisdale Playgroup’s recycling collections with TerraCycle arranged for Whitby Library to house a collection box for the local community.

Mrs Walsh said: “Two TerraCycle points are earned for the weight of each coffee packaging unit that is returned, with each point being redeemable for a one pence contribution.

“The money raised will be split equally between Glaisdale Playgroup and St. Hedda’s RC Primary School who will use it for craft materials, play sand and playground equipment."
