DISABLED bowlers are taking to the greens following a charity donation of £10,200.

Ivy Wilson, a former women’s bowling champion has been bowling for 37 years but had to give up her hobby when health complications with septicaemia resulted in the loss of fingers and toes.

Funding from the Community Foundation Tyne and Wear and Northumberland means Houghton Town Bowls Club has been able to buy ten specially adapted wheelchairs to help people with disabilities take part in a fun team sport and compete in regional competitions.

Mrs Wilson said: “I think the wheelchair will make a difference because I need exercise.

“I joined the club in 1980 and I’m the longest serving lady member of this club but had to stop due to my health.

“I enjoy bowling, and I can’t wait to start playing next season and hopefully win some more trophies for the club.”

The project is supported by the North-East tea firm, Ringtons, who have been to meet members of the club.

Colin Smith, managing director of the Ringtons Tea Packing Division, said: “Houghton Town Bowls is a wonderful project, which is helping people take part in a healthy team sport.”
