CHRIS LLOYD, the chief feature writer for the Northern Echo and local historian, will be in Durham this weekend to talk about how a megalomaniac maverick took on the Quaker elite and successfully won a town its own council and MP.

Mr Lloyd will be the guest speaker of Durham County Local History Society at the City Theatre on Saturday, March 17.

The talk, King Henry the Ninth and the Spark of Ingenuity – 150 Years of Darlington Borough Council, will highlight how Henry King Spark caused the Pease Party immense embarrassment as they resorted to underhand and corrupt methods to keep him out of Parliament.

The talk will take place in the City Theatre, Fowler’s Yard, Back Silver Street, Durham City.

The talk is free and open to non-members and starts at 2.30pm.
