EIGHT students swapped their digs for the pavement as they ‘slept out’ for charity.

The Durham University students staged a 24-hour sleepout in Durham Market Place from Friday to Saturday evening to raise awareness of the plight of street children in Uganda.

The scholars had no bed, no provisions, no money and relied entirely on the kindness of strangers.

Hazel White, one of those involved, said: "For us, one night in the Market Place was a challenge with the noise, the cold and the rain.

"But this is the daily reality for so many. Hopefully, through the work of Abaana, we can make a difference to the lives of these street children in Uganda."

The effort raised £700 for Abaana, an African children’s charity which has been working with Ugandan street children since 2007 – building accommodation and helping youngsters get an education.
