A COUNCIL has pledged its support for the Fairtrade movement.
Leaders of all Durham County Council’s six political groups signed a resolution backing the principles of the ethical shopping campaign, which aims to help food producers and farmers in developing countries.
The declaration commits the council to working to increase the range of Fairtrade products in its buildings and promoting the issue.
Council leader Simon Henig said: "Durham County Council welcomes this opportunity to support this initiative that upholds the principles of fair wages and working conditions.
"The authority will take all possible steps to promote fairly traded products both within the council and across County Durham."
The signing of the resolution, at County Hall on Friday, comes during the annual Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from Monday, February 22, until Saturday, March 6.
