THREE suspected burglars have been snared by police after a tip-off from an eagle-eyed neighbour.

At 9pm on Tuesday Northumbria Police received a call from a resident on Gainsborough Grove, in Newcastle.

They told officers they had witnessed intruders force entry to a property on their street before making off with stolen goods, including a large TV.

Police were deployed and found a property had been burgled but the offenders had fled the scene.

After extensive CCTV and house-to-house enquiries, officers identified a number of suspects.

Three suspected thieves were found at two addresses and police were able to recover all of the stolen goods stolen in the burglary.

Now the officer who leads a team of burglar hunters in Newcastle and Gateshead has thanked the public for their support.

Detective Sergeant Dave Lumsden, of the Force’s Central Burglary Team, said: “This was a fantastic piece of work by response officers to quickly gather information from the scene of the crime.

“Their early actions to review CCTV and speak to people on the street has undoubtedly helped to secure vital evidence.

“It is really positive to make three early arrests and we will now carry out a full investigation with the view of securing a conviction in court.

“But ultimately none of this would have been possible if the member of the public did not pick up the phone and contact police.

“We know that not everyone would do this but it is vitally important that you do contact us if you witness any suspicious behaviour.

“You are the eyes and ears in our local communities and we need your help to deter criminals from operating in our region.”

Two men, aged 49 and 32, have been charged with burglary and are due at court today. A 57-year-old who was arrested has been released.

Northumbria Police’s Central Burglary Team are a team of burglar hunters tasked with investigating break-ins across Newcastle and Gateshead.
