SHOPPERS can get their Christmas preparations underway at a market's special evening opening.

Durham's Market Hall will be open late on Tuesday for the first of a series of Christmas shopping specials, with live festive music, including from Chester-le-Street Salvation Army Band, and seasonal refreshments available.

There will also be entertainment for children, including a treasure hunt.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: “We want people to experience Durham’s Market Hall at its festive best.

"Come in and enjoy Christmas favourites performed by Ashley Stirling and the Chester-le-Street Salvation Army Band, relax with a mince pie and warming punch in Café Cenno and make the most of entertainment for the kids which includes a treasure hunt throughout the day, and LED glow entertainment from 4.30pm.

“If you’re wondering when you’ll select Christmas cards, or order your turkey, or find time for any other Christmas shopping and preparation, then this is the perfect opportunity.

"The Market Hall is also the place to find unique and niche presents – from jewellery and watches, to vinyls and collectable vintage toys.

"It’ll be fun and festive, and at the same time you’re supporting local independent businesses.”

The Christmas event on Tuesday takes place between 4.30pm and 7pm.

The market will also be open every day in December, until Christmas, including on Sundays.
