A POPULAR Durham University concert series is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a diverse, international programme of music and performers.

Since its first concert back in 1969, MUSICON has featured more than 500 events and music from the Middle Ages to the present.

The new season will include musicians from the Netherlands, Norway, India and Korea, as well as outstanding homegrown talent.

It began with a local focus as three concerts held last month included music from six Durham-based composers, performed by the world-leading contemporary music group the Ives Ensemble.

The next event is on Tuesday when John Snijders, from the university’s music department, a leading pianist, will give a concert titled Flexibility and Freedom, featuring works by Hensel-Mendelssohn, Hummel and Schubert.

It is at the music school on Palace Green in Durham tickets costing £5, with discounts for students and concessions, are available on the door.

Dr James Weeks, an assistant professor in the music department, said: “MUSICON has hosted some of the world’s best-known artists and put on a spectacular number and diversity of events.

“MUSICON offers world-class music at very reasonable prices right here on Durham’s doorstep and our 50th anniversary programme promises some superb performances. Whether you’re a dedicated music fan or just a little curious, we’d love to welcome you.”
