A TEN-year-old visiting Durham has won an annual quiz aimed at getting people to find out more about the city.

The Durham Pointers, who are volunteers who help to welcome visitors to the city and provide them with information, devise a quiz every year based around the Market Hall.

This year's photo puzzler got people to search for answers by finding the source of photos taken around the Market Place and Market Hall.

It was won by ten-year-old Sophie White, who was visiting Durham from Richmond, in North Yorkshire.

Moira Bent, from Durham Pointers, said: "There were some tricky questions but Sophie White, aged 10, from Richmond, came up trumps, answering every single question correctly."

She was given her prize by Eric Bulmer, who is chairman of the Wardens of the Durham City Freemen.

The Pointers, who have now been around for eight years and have twice won the North-East Visitor Information Provider of the Year at the regional tourism awards, have just completed their season for the year.

They operate between Easter and October each year and can always be spotted in their distinctive pink tabards in Durham's Market Place, where they do their best to make people feel welcome and help them find their way around they city.

People can still have a go at the Pointer's photo puzzler, which can be downloaded from their website at www.durhampointers.co.uk.
