TWO volunteers for Durham Wildlife Trust received special recognition yesterday, to mark ten years of dedication.

Jacqui Walker, 36, from Shiney Row, Wearside, and Margaret Brabban, 69, from Shadforth, County Durham, were awarded a special service badge during a celebratory afternoon tea at the trust’s headquarters at Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve near Houghton-le-Spring.

Emily Routledge, trust membership development officer, said: “Jacqui has cerebral palsy and had found it hard in the past to find work. She decided to give volunteering a try instead and has become an invaluable member of the team, carrying out a range of administrative tasks to support the Trust.”

Margaret joined the trust after retiring from a headteacher role at Usworth Colliery Nursery School in the Washington area. She volunteers on the trust’s nature reserve, carrying out a range of tasks, and works in the office and helps at trust events.

Emily said: “Margaret uses her skills from work to support the trust’s education team and is a vital part of the charity’s day-to-day running. We were delighted to award both Jacqui and Margaret with their long-service award badges.”

Jacqui, who volunteers twice a week at the trust and helps in the office, making up membership packs, making free-post envelopes and doing the office shredding, said: “I really enjoy helping the trust and the afternoon tea and award was a really nice surprise.” Margaret said: “Since retiring, I have had great pleasure in helping at the trust. It has made me focus more on the environment in which we live, giving me a renewed outlook. I have met many people, from different walks of life, and am grateful for the friendships I’ve made.”
