A GROUP of green-fingered volunteers have been helping to the brighten up their village.

Easington Village in Bloom Group have been growing plants and flowers with funding from believe housing’s community grant.

With just £350 the village green has been surrounded by colourful blooms in brand new long-life planters.

The 30-strong voluntary group also brought in help from local Brownie groups to help with the planting and encourage future generations to become involved in improving up their community.

Funding Officer from believe housing, Damian Pearson, said: “They’ve really made an impact around the village green. We were over the moon that we could help the group with the planting.

“Projects like this, where even a relatively small amount of funding can make a big difference, were exactly why we created out community funding programme.”

Further funding for the planting project came from Durham County Councillors Angela Surtees and David Boyes from their neighbourhood budgets.

Councillor Surtees said: “When Easington Village in Bloom contacted us about their dilapidated flower tubs we were very happy to help fund new ones. The community volunteers do a marvellous job.”
