A CLASSIC children's book is being brought to the stage at a park in County Durham.

The Secret Garden is being put on at Wharton Park, Durham, on Saturday.

The popular children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett is being staged by Chapterhouse Theatre Company, which is inviting audiences to join young Mary Lennox on a journey of discovery as she is sent to her uncle’s house in the countryside, where mysteries and secrets lurk round every corner.

Darryl Cox, Durham County Council’s principal parks and countryside ranger, said: “Wharton Park offers a wonderful setting for this production, and it really is an experience for all the family. What better way to enjoy the summer light nights, and discover something new?”

The outdoor show starts on Saturday 10 August at 6.30pm.

Attendees can set up their pitch in the park from 5.30pm, entering through the amphitheatre.

Tickets cost £16 for adults, £11 for a child and £46 for a family of four.

They can be booked online at www.durham.gov.uk/whartonparkevents or by calling the Gala Box Office on 03000 266 600.
