A COMMUNITY is set to stage a celebration of an arts event that transformed their village.

The showcase event will reflect on the day in May that saw Horden Colliery host a series of major art installations in local bus shelters with a range of supportive activities. Over 350 local people were involved in staging the event which was viewed by almost 6,000 people from near and far on May 14.

The event was a major commission delivered by artists Sally Southern and Nicola Lynch as part of the of the East Durham Creates arts project, funded by Arts Council England.

The free celebration event is to be held at Horden Welfare Centre on Wednesday as a thank you to local people. It will include a screening of a professionally produced film about the project, a photographic exhibition, the distribution of commemorative items from the day and art activities.

A buffet lunch is provided and everyone is welcome to attend the event which runs from 11am to 4pm.

Malcolm Fallow, chief executive of East Durham Trust chief, which leads the East Durham Creates project, said “This is our opportunity to say thank you to everyone who was involved in this groundbreaking project and reflect on the potential impact art can make”.

The event is being held in partnership with Horden Parish Council.
