CITY centre shoppers and tourists got to test if they have what it takes to be as 'swift and bold' as members of The Rifles.

The regiment held a range of free family activities on Palace Green, in Durham, on Saturday including army fitness tests, climbing walls, a display of equipment used on operations across the world and information about the historic links The Rifles share with the community through The Durham Light Infantry Collection.

There were also musical performances throughout the day which culminated in a sunset Sounding Retreat by the Band and Bugles of the County Durham Army Cadet Force, joined by buglers from 8th Battalion The Rifles and Silver Bugle Association.

The Rifles formed in 2007 when four of the most famous Regiments in the British Army merged together to become the biggest infantry regiment of the British Army with five regular battalions and three reserve battalions. It holds an incredible 913 battle honours, 117 Victoria Cross awards and all riflemen strive to live up to its motto ‘Swift and Bold’.
