POLICE are warning people to be wary of a suspected telephone scam which saw two pensioners asked to reveal personal information over the phone.
On Thursday morning, a woman living in the Four Lane Ends area of Newcastle received a suspicious phone call from a man who claimed she must pay a large sum of cash to cover an income tax bill.
The caller said the woman must pay £10,000 in order to avoid a court appearance.
The woman, in her 80s, did not pass over any bank details and contacted police.
Officers also received a similar report at on Thursday from a woman in her 70s living in the Walker area.
Inspector Paul Allen, of Northumbria Police, said: “We would advise members of the public to be vigilant of phone scams and ensure their relatives are aware that opportunistic criminals operate in this way. Scammers are sophisticated criminals who often target the most vulnerable in our society.”
