A COMMUNITY will be paying tribute to soldiers who died during the first world war during an event on Remembrance Sunday.

People from Wheatley Hill have helped create a multimedia project to tell the story of the conflict, which will be shown at the war memorial at 4.30pm.

Wheatley Hill History Club held a series of workshops so recordings could be made of people telling stories and making tributes.

The final work, Voices in the Darkness, was created by Lonely Tower Film and Media.

Mark Thornburn said: “By using the voices of today’s community we are ensuring that the link between then and now is real and tangible.

“These are not scripted comments, these are the raw feelings and emotions of people looking back to the events of a century ago and struggling to understand.”

“People sometimes criticise younger members of the community for not knowing or caring about their history, this project has shown that nothing could be further from the truth – the mantle is being passed on and it is being received with incredible gratitude and respect.”

Margaret Hedley, from Wheatley Hill History Group

Margaret Hedley, from Wheatley Hill History Club, said: “We have put a great deal of effort into uncovering the truth behind Wheatley Hill’s war. Members of the history club have conducted tireless research into what going to war actually meant, not only for those that left to fight, but also for those left behind.

“We are delighted to be working with Lonely Tower Film & Media again and are so grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for their continued support.”
