A YOUTH project is having a community day to open its new remembrance garden and unveil a statue which commemorates the centenary of the end of the First World War.

The Cheesy Waffles Youth Project, which is based in Belmont, is holding the event tomorrow, from 12noon to 3pm.

The group is unveiling its Tommy statue, a silhouette of a First World War soldier, which is part of the ‘There But Not There’ campaign, to raise funds for armed forces charities.

They have also created a remembrance garden at their base at Belmont Community Centre and will be displaying a photo exhibition, which was done by some of the adults who attend the project as part of their research into life in Durham during the war.

Other activities include a bouncy castle and games, tombola, raffle, bingo and arts and crafts. Refreshments will also be on offer.
