COUNCILLORS have approved the conversion of a dwelling to form a seven-bed apart hotel in Seaham.

Members of a Durham County Council area planning committee meeting agreed to the plans submitted by David Irwin for the property at 16 Tempest Road.

The apart hotel, which will have no manager or owners living on site, will will comprise five guest rooms with en-suite rooms only, along with a two-bedroom self-contained family apartment offering self-catering facilities.

There were 10 letters of objection, including a petition signed by 21 people, citing potential noise and parking problems, as well as 19 letters in support, saying there was a shortage of reasonably priced overnight accommodation in the town.

Planning officers recommended approval, saying parking spaces available were adequate.
