A CRIMINAL labelled “not a very good burglar” by a judge has had four months cut from his sentence.

Michael Lonergan was given a 28-month prison sentence for a crime spree targeting commercial premises in Durham, in which he was always caught, or left evidence indicating his involvement.

The 23-year-old, of Worcester Road, Newton Hall, Durham, admitted four theft charges, two each of burglary and attempted burglary, plus one of assault by beating, relating to a shop security guard who challenged him.

Eight months of the total sentence was for the assault on the shop employee.

But, as the maximum sentence for assault by beating is six months, Deputy Circuit Judge Paul Worsley QC reduced Lonergan’s jail term by a total of four months, to exactly two years.
