TWO teenage gymnasts are celebrating after winning bronze medals at a national contest.
Drew Armstrong, 13, and 18-year-old Vicky Gargan represented Deereness Gymnastics Academy at Ushaw Moor in the Acrobatic British Championships on Merseyside earlier this month.
The two girls worked as a team and came third in the 12-18 section of the two day contest at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.
Drew is currently a pupil at Consett Academy and her mother, Cindy Clark, said she had been with the club for around five years.
Miss Clark, from Consett, who works as a catering assistant, said: “It is amazing for them. It is a big achievement and comes from lot of hours of hard work.
“They spend 14 to16 hours a week in training so it is great.
“We are all really proud of her. It has been really hard because Vicky has been doing her A-levels so she has been doing her training on top of her exams. She has had a lot to contend with.
“The sport as a whole has been amazing for them. It has helped with Drew’s confidence overall and the school has been a good support to her and given her time off so she can go to competitions. We are over the moon.”
