HAPPY memories spanning 60 years of married life were celebrated by a couple, their family and friends at the weekend.

Peter and Jane Beckwith enjoyed a grand diamond wedding day celebration, with a lunch function at the Masonic Hall, in Old Elvet, Durham.

The couple, originally from Teesside, but now living at Witton Gilbert, near Durham, were honoured with a presentation of a bouquet by the city’s Deputy Mayor, Patrick Conway and his wife Patricia.

Peter Cussons, best man at their wedding, at Southfield Road Methodist Church in Middlesbrough, in 1955, read out greetings, including the Queen’s congratulatory card.

Their wedding day bridesmaid, Anne Clinkard, was also present for the occasion.

Following lunch, entertainment was provided by members of Youth Connection, the Chester-le-Street-based young people’s theatre company.

Memorabilia from the Beckwith’s wedding day and recalling their lives since was dotted round the room.

Mr Beckwith’s working life was spent in commercial sales in the steel industry, while he is also well known in local golfing circles, having been a former captain of the Durham City club.

Mrs Beckwith is a retired teacher who spent 25 years at what is now Trinity School, in Durham.

Four generations of their family travelled from various parts of the country for Saturday’s (April 11) celebration, including the youngest, three-year-old great grand-daughter Eliza.
