AN ARMED forces charity is appealing for the public’s support ahead of two street collections.

Supporters of the Durham branch of SSAFA will be collecting in Durham city centre from 10.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday, May 11, and outside Sainsbury’s, at the Arnison Centre, Pity Me, from 9.30am to 5pm on Friday, May 17.

The charity provides practical, emotional and financial support to veterans and their families.

All the money donated will be used locally. Last year, the group helped more than 400 people across County Durham, Darlington and Hartlepool.

Colonel Arthur Charlton, chairman of SSAFA Durham branch, said: “We believe that the commitment of our forces and their families deserves our lifelong support.

“Whenever our ex-servicemen or their dependants need us, we’ll do what we can to help.

“Our clients are changing and so are their needs. Younger veterans are increasingly likely to come forward for our assistance.

“The move into civilian life can be a difficult one with common issues including housing, relationships, employment and mental health.”
