POLICE are hunting vandals who damaged a community centre.

The rear of Hamsteels Community Centre, on Western Avenue, in Esh Winning, was damaged between April 23 and 25.

Police are appealing for help in catching those responsible and asking residents to be vigilant to prevent any further incidents.

PC Chris Watson said: “The building is a vital resource that is used by all members of the community, including youth groups, the elderly and various other clubs.

“It is run and funded by the parish council, which means the cost of repairing the damage is likely to have a negative impact on residents.

“The people who run the centre are concerned that the viability of the hall will be called into question, should any more instances like this occur.

“We are asking local people to help us keep the venue secure by keeping a watchful eye over it over the coming weeks and reporting anything suspicious to the police by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.

“We would also like assistance in identifying the individuals who caused the damage.”

Anyone with information is asked to call PC Chris Watson on Durham Police’s non-emergency number, 101.
