A SIX-month programme of art shows in a former council office is drawing to a close.

Arts group Empty Shop has staged nine exhibitions in 17 Claypath since moving into the former Durham County Council offices last October.

The final show in the current run, Colony – by James Watts, opened last Friday (March 15) and runs until Wednesday, March 27.

The work includes numerous otherworldly sack-like forms suspended across the space, connected by criss-crossing strings. Eerie sounds play constantly in the background.

Project manager Carlo Viglianisi said: “Contemporary arts in Durham is trying but needs all the support it can get.

“Projects like this are a great way to liven up the high street and engage people with the arts so we encourage anyone interested in the arts to come along.”

Empty Shop began in 2008, aimed at providing platforms for artists of all levels and backgrounds.

It has operated in a former video shop in Gilesgate and various venues across Durham city centre.

The Community Interest Company now has a permanent base at the bottom of North Road, where it stages poetry evenings, music nights and other events.

Since October, 17 Claypath has hosted contemporary painting, digital and film works, photography and more, with contributors including students, emerging artists and established names.

Colony is open from 10am to 4pm daily except Sundays, until Wednesday. Entry is free.
