THE region’s newest wind farm has been switched on.

The three turbine South Sharpley Wind Farm, in East Durham, went live this week two years after it was first granted planning permission.

Operators REG Windpower says the turbines will generate enough electricity to power for more than 3,500 households each year.

Neil Harris, construction and operations director with operator REG Windpower, said: "We appreciate the patience of local people during the construction of the wind farm.

"We look forward to the site generating much needed safe, clean, renewable energy for many years to come.

"We are also delighted that local groups have already begun to benefit from the wind farm’s community fund, and we look forward to supporting even more good causes over the coming years."

So far, the company has donated more than £86,000 to good causes in the area, including donations to Seaham Harbour Cricket Club, East Durham Heritage Group’s appeal to restore the George Elmy Lifeboat and £17,000 towards regenerating facilities at Seaton Village Hall.

Projects within a three-mile radius of the wind farm can apply for funds through the County Durham Community Foundation’s webpage www.cdcf.org.uk/apply-for-a-grant.
