THE LATEST monthly Shoppers’ Service takes place at St Andrew’s Methodist Church, in Coxhoe, near Durham, on Saturday (February 2).

It is the 60th informal half-hour Saturday service staged since refurbishment of St Andrew’s worship area was completed in February 2008.

The services, which run from 10am - 10.30am, are aimed at people who find the normal pattern of Sunday worship unsuited to their needs.

This Saturday’s guest speaker will be lay preacher Helen Morton, from Blackhall, east Durham.

WHITE MONKS: Photographer Philip Nixon leads a two-mile guided walk on the Durham/Northumberland county boundary, west of Derwent Reservoir, tomorrow (Tuesday January 29). The walk, offering many photographic opportunities, is titled: Winter with the White Monks, and starts from Baybridge picnic area, half-a-mile west of Blanchland village, at 10.30am. It is expected to take two hours to complete.

NOSTALGIA NIGHT: A series of filmed stories reflecting the industrial heritage of the River Tyne, and specifically its shipyards, from the 1950s to the 1980s, will be screened at Durham’s Gala Theatre, on Sunday (February 3), at 7.30pm. Men of the Tyne includes songs, stories and the film clips of those who worked on the river during the post-war era. The show’s writer is Tom Kelly using footage compiled by Andrew Hagan, backed by the music of Ian Ravenscroft. Admission is £10, or £8 for concessions and £5 for the Friends of the Gala.
