FAMILIES in Darlington are helping to ensure that Bonfire Night goes off with a bang.

Parents and children have teamed up to build a 25ft effigy of Guy Fawkes for the centrepiece of this year's bonfire and fireworks display at South Park.

The project, at the town's McNay Street Children's Centre, was part of family learning week when parents helped children during the week.

It was a partnership of Darlington Arts Centre and Darlington Primary Care Trust.

John Pearson, fathers' development officer at SureStart, said: "We encourage local families to come to the centre and get involved with many of the activities we offer.

"Building the Guy encourages families to join in with a community event where they can go to see the work they have created."

Darlington Arts Centre co-ordinator Bonnie Davies said: "We make a Guy every year for South Park bonfire.

"The children love getting involved with the painting and sticking and the parents help out with the sewing and stuffing, so everyone gets involved."

Health visitor Michelle Wolstenholme said: "It's a great opportunity for parents and children to work together.

"It's also a good chance to talk to the children about fire safety and the dangers of fireworks, especially at this time of year."
