CHILDREN had the chance to try their hand at golf yesterday, as a professional player helped them with their technique.

Youngsters taking part in a week-long holiday camp, at Longfield School in Darlington, yesterday had a workshop in golf skills.

Sports including volleyball, rugby and tennis are also included in the week.

Professional golfer Craig Dilley showed youngsters how to perfect their swing, and gave them tips on how to reach the top.

The week-long camp is organised by Planet Sport Kids' Club, run by Di Jackson, a single mother so disillusioned with the choice of children's activities, she set up her own business to provide sports for youngsters.

After-school clubs are also planned at Longfield, Hummersknott, Branksome schools and Darlington Education Village, and at Middleton Tyas Primary School, in North Yorkshire.

Ms Jackson, a qualified tennis and football coach, said it was proving a popular idea.

"It's good to have kids doing sport to help with obesity and improve fitness, but it's also something interesting for them to do," she said.
