James Walshaw has become the latest player to leave Darlington after joining FC Halifax Town.

The Dewsbury-born striker only joined Quakers in the summer with Mark Cooper making his move after scoring 32 goals last season for Guiseley in the Conference North.

Cooper pinned his hopes on the 27-year-old leading a promotion charge and he regularly found the net in pre-season.

However, despite appearing in all but one of the club's 21 matches this term, he scored only three times and now drops back to division from where he came.

As the transfer window has closed, Walshaw has moved on loan until January when the switch will automatically extend for a further loan until the end of the campaign.

Walshaw becomes the fourth to leave in the last fortnight, following Michael Brough, John Campbell and Greg Taylor. Chairman Raj Singh hopes there will be more exits before the weekend.

Quakers can ill afford to lose any more forwards as Ryan Bowman has suffered a hamstring strain in training and is expected to be out for around three weeks.

As the total number of players leaving increases, so too does the likelihood of caretaker manager Craig Liddle using one or two youth team players to supplement the squad on Saturday at Ebbsfleet United.

The teenagers, however, did their chances of a call-up no harm at all last night as they brushed aside Shrewsbury Town to reach the third round of the FA Youth Cup and set up a tie at Newcastle United.

An attendance of 290 at The Northern Echo Arena saw Quakers record a 2-0 win thanks to second half goals from Chris Dickinson and Tom Robson, though their performance meant the margin of victory could have been greater.

During an impressive first 45 minutes from the hosts, pacey right-winger Danny Lambert went close on three occasions.

First he thundered a shot against the post, then saw an effort roll inches wide and his final effort was a 25-yard volley that Shrewsbury keeper Callum Bukton did well to push over.

Dickinson's goal was a close-rage tap-in after centre-back Scott Mould had headed Rob Ramshaw's free-kick back across goal 13 minutes after the restart, and Robson's came after dribbling through the Shrews' defence in injury time.

Quakers will play at St James' Park in the week commencing December 12.
