A Darlington law firm is predicting a significant rise in the number of cases relating to debt and housing problems.

Clark Willis said the economic climate and changes in housing law would affect the number of people seeking advice under the legal aid scheme.

The firm has won a contract with the Legal Services Commission to advise on hundreds of social welfare cases in the Darlington area, such as rent arrears, welfare benefits, debt and employment.

Kelly Bushby, who heads the housing team at Clark Willis, said: "We are proud to have been awarded this work and it reflects the excellent service we provide for clients seeking advice on social welfare issues.

"We're expecting a busy year ahead with many more people seeking help if they find themselves with money worries or face eviction. It's a reflection of the times, but many more people will need our help."

Clark Willis has expanded its social welfare team with the addition of Matthew Sigsworth, formerly welfare rights manager with Darlington Borough Council.
