A NEWLY-QUALIFIED Royal Air Force officer is flying high after graduating from a military college.

Ron Towers, 33, graduated as a flying officer at the officer and aircrew cadet training unit at RAF Cranwell, near Sleaford, in Lincolnshire.

Mr Towers joined 88 other cadets outside the college hall to parade in front of Air ViceMarshal Greg Bagwell.

Music on the day was provided by the band of the Royal Air Force Regiment and there were flypasts by Tornado aircraft from 617 Sqn RAF Lossiemouth.

Mr Towers, whose parents live in Darlington, attended Hummersknott School before joining the RAF in 1997.

Now that he has graduated as an officer he will continue his professional training with the engineering branch.

After the parade, he said: "I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the world with the RAF and have enjoyed every minute of my service so far."

A keen sportsman, he enjoys mountain biking, snow boarding and sailing, and has represented the RAF at tennis.
