CHILDREN from a Darlington nursery and holiday club enjoyed competing in a pentathlon yesterday.

Youngsters from Topoli Joe Nursery, in Northgate, took part in an egg and spoon race, slide-a-thon, a penalty shoot-out, bean bag throwing and a treasure hunt in aid of charity.

The nursery has been fundraising for the Sands charity this year. It helps families of stillborn babies or babies who die while very young.

Earlier this year, nursery children filled Smartie tubes with 20p pieces in aid of the cause. And, along with funds raised from a summer fair, the nursery is expecting to raise a total of £500.

About 30 children, aged from 18 months to 11, took part in the event at the nursery soft play centre.

Nursery manager Sandra Zafarani said: "I would like to thank all the children, parents and staff who helped raise funds.

"A special thanks to one parent, Miss Collins, who raised a staggering £230.

"Great fun was had by all."
