A surgeon is taking part in the Great North Run to raise money for the RNLI.

David Macafee, a trainee surgeon at Darlington Memorial Hospital, wants to complete the race and raise at least £700 for the lifeboat charity.

He said: "I grew up in a fishing village in Northern Ireland called Donaghadee, a place steeped in maritime history. The RNLI and its crews were part of that history.

"I hope that between us, the RNLI runners can fund some crews. Without them, the waters round these islands would be a much less safe place."

All RNLI runners receive a comprehensive support pack, including training advice, a running vest and an invitation to an exclusive post-race reception at South Shields Sailing Club.

A complimentary sports massage will also be available.

Last year, more than £10,000 was raised for the charity in the Great North Run.

Catherine Kaye, RNLI events manager in the North, said: "The RNLI relies on donations for the £119m it needs each year. The efforts of people like our Great North Runners are vital to continuing our crucial work in the sea."
